Incubation involves the gradual generation of a solution to a problem at an unconscious level, usually after a period of conscious effort to solve it. When a person takes a break and does something else, such as eating a meal, no conscious effort is applied but at an unconscious level, the brain may still be working on the problem. Insight Insight is when people suddenly discover the solution to a problem after originally failing to do so. Incubation can lead to insight when a person works on a problem for a long time, takes a break, and then suddenly gets an insight that allows them to figure out the solution to the problem. While insight can occur as a result of incubation, it doesn’t have to and may occur in the middle of consciously working on a problem. Incubation and insight are approaches that allow for the sudden realization of how to solve a problem.
