I returned for another walk along the Salish Sea, this time focusing on the Arbutus tree, also known as the Pacific madrone. Arbutus means “strawberry tree” in Latin, a reference to the bright red fruits that appear in the fall.
This tree is native to the west coast and grows in rocky environments. Its white flowers begin to appear now and the super smooth, peeling bark looks especially vibrant in the sunset light.
In the background, eagles and owls could be heard while bright pink salmonberry flowers and young fern unfolded along the trail.
