Arcadia (Arcade) Playthrough
Playthrough of Arcadia (also known as Rapid Hero), the 1994 vertically scrolling shoot 'em up developed by NMK and published by Media Trading Corporation for arcades. Often referred to by its alternate title Rapid Hero, this game is a quintessential example of NMK’s high-speed, high-intensity shooter design. Unlike many "bullet hell" titles that focus on slow, complex patterns, Arcadia emphasizes raw speed and aggressive enemy waves. The game sets players in a futuristic sci-fi war where they pilot a sleek fighter ship through eight intense stages, ranging from deep space stations to planetary surfaces. The gameplay is defined by its rapid-fire mechanics. Players must frequently tap the fire button to unleash bursts of energy, as the game rewards high-frequency shooting. The power-up system is robust, featuring stackable P icons to increase standard shot power, along with specialized sub-weapons like lasers for heavy targets, cluster mines for clearing paths, and homing missiles for managing stray enemies. A key strategic element is the special weapon, which triggers a massive, screen-clearing explosion. The scoring system also encourages risky play; destroyed enemies leave behind stars that increase in value from 100 to 5,000 points as long as the player remains alive. If the player's ship is destroyed, the star value resets, making survival crucial for high-score runs. Visually, Arcadia features the detailed sprite work and mechanical designs NMK was famous for, including massive multi-part bosses that transform or reveal new turrets as they take damage. The boss of each stage is a recurring giant robot character that adopts increasingly lethal forms. Combined with a driving, upbeat FM-synth soundtrack, Arcadia/Rapid Hero remains a cult favorite for arcade enthusiasts seeking a pure, adrenaline-fueled shooting experience from the mid-90s.
