This rapid-fire video shows you how the animation tools operate.
The animation tools record soley the extent changes of a map window i.e. it is not a macro recorder and layer changes for example will be ignored.
Animation playback simply animates the map, changing the extents as you altered them during recording with tools such as pan and zoom.
Feel free to play with all the options (and there are many!) after watching this video.
