A playthrough of Irem's 1991 action-puzzle arcade game, Atomic Punk. Played through the normal mode on the default difficulty level. Atomic Punk, as it was called in the US (Dynablaster in Europe, Bomberman in Japan), was the first game in the Bomberman series specifically made for arcades. Though it shares its name with Hudson's 1990 Game Boy Bomberman game, the titles aren't otherwise related. Since Bomberman has always been all about multiplayer action, the arcade format is a natural fit for the classic series penchant for super-chaotic action packed into short rounds. The game has changed slightly, though, in its first coin-op incarnation. You no longer need to find the exit for each stage - this time, wiping out all of the enemies in a room will move you forward in the game. Most of the classic power-ups are here, too, though oddly enough, the US version of the game omits the battle mode all together. The game supports four players, but they can only play together as they work through the 36-stage story mode. Strangely enough, Atomic Punk is among the first games in the series that contained cutscenes that conveyed some sort of "narrative." The story is entirely disposable, but the little cinematics are pretty neat and show off a different side of the personality of the earlier games. The graphics are bright and colorful, and the style, though a bit different from the Hudson-developed games, suits it well. I really liked the cartoony monster designs in this one. The sound is good too, even if the soundtrack isn't as memorable as the music found in the console games. Atomic Punk is probably among the more obscure Bomberman titles in the west. Whether it's a reflection of the unfamiliar name, the arcade format, or something else, I don't know. But if you are a Bomberman fan, this one is well worth checking out for, if nothing else, the sheer novelty of it all. It's pretty damned fun, to boot. If you like Bomberman, be sure to check out my playthroughs of other games in the series too! You can find them in my playlists for NES, SNES, TurboGrafx-16, Game Boy, Genesis, and Saturn games. _ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
