Augmentez ma Maman
While talking about the wage inequality of women vs. men, and how to negotiate a raise, my son Victor said "how about I write a letter to Mom's boss?" (For the record, this was purely hypothetical... in our family we're lucky not to have such issues.) But we thought the idea was cute, and this gave us the starting point for a song. It had to be in the style of a 1920's "chanson réaliste," with the son pleading for his Mom to get a raise. Then there was the question of the ending. When I asked the kids how the story should conclude, I got a few different opinions. Victor wanted a happy ending, which we present in this video. But I think Edith Piaf would have objected to this. So there will be another, much darker version, in keeping with the tragic style of such songs. Stay tuned for that one and get out your handkerchiefs!
