avenue z - ephemerol

azimut LP [Slovenly Recordings/702-180/web/2016] https://slovenly.bandcamp.com/album/avenue-z-azimut-lp bonjour earthlings, this broadcast has traveled many thousands of miles from the distant celestial body known in your language as "france". this is AVENUE Z, and you are welcome. released earlier this month on slovenly, the album is a mix and mash of some really great ideas sorta coming together to make a mostly-cohesive, fun album. but let's talk about this track first. ephemerol is an other-worldly mix of wide, moog-like synth wizardry coupled with really solid, riff-heavy fuzz rock. it's fucking great. the rest of the album isn't really like ephemerol, sticking to a more earth-like mix of rock'n'roll (with the occasional synth) that blends garage fuzziness and the pick precision and drum patterns of traditional surf rock. it runs a little longer than i'm partial to, just over the 40 minute mark, and while i don't feel like any tracks overstay their welcome, the rest of the album just doesn't conjure the same magic as this opening track. all of this isn't to say the album wasn't really good, but AVENUE Z might have shot themselves in the foot by opening with this track's'all i'm sayin'. **SUPPORT THE ARTISTS, YA NERDS**
