Here’s What Most People Get Wrong** If you’re feeling hesitant about hiring a virtual assistant overseas, you're definitely not alone—and there are some big mistakes people make when they dive into remote staffing for the first time. In this video, I share my own experience, the traps to avoid, and what to do instead so your virtual assistant journey is successful from day one. I've been working with remote teams for well over a decade now, and in that time I've seen a lot—home-based VAs, dodgy sweatshops, great hires and not-so-great ones. What I’ve learned is that hiring a virtual assistant (whether for a small business, a coaching practice, or a large corporation) can be a brilliant move—but only if it’s done right. I’ll walk you through the most common virtual assistant mistakes people make, like: * **Not doing the legals properly** – Make sure everything’s above board, both in your country and where your VA is based. That includes local tax, super, and healthcare obligations. * **Choosing the wrong support model** – Home-based VAs can work, but they often come with risks. No IT support, flaky internet, and no fallback when they go AWOL. * **Falling into the ‘cheap labour’ trap** – Don’t pay too little or too much. Fair and reliable pay matters for both morale and retention. * **Hiring the wrong person** – A clear job description and hiring for attitude and communication skills (especially in customer-facing roles) can make all the difference. * **Skipping proper training** – You wouldn’t throw a new office employee in the deep end, so don’t do it to a VA. Train them, let them ask questions, and give them the confidence to learn and grow. * **Neglecting retention** – Remote staff aren’t disposable. Treat them well and they’ll stick with you for years. At Virtual Done Well, we’ve got plenty of people who’ve been with us for over a decade. Speaking of **Virtual Done Well**, that’s the remote staffing business I founded—not as a money-making venture, but as a **social enterprise**. We set it up to create quality jobs in a region of the Philippines with five universities and limited career opportunities. It's all about good jobs for great people, and any profits go straight back into supporting local charities. Clients even get charity certificates to show the impact they’re helping us create. So yes, it’s a business—but one with heart. Whether you’re looking for a home-based VA, an agency model, or want to tap into our own team at Virtual Done Well, this video should help you avoid the usual pitfalls and get started the right way.
