AWESOME Animation Character SHAPE Design Secrets and Practice
TV Animation Character Shape Design Exercise: Turn Dynamic Shapes into Character Heads Swendly teaches an exercise for designing TV animation characters using the “four shape” drawing method to improve shape design skills. The artist draws on paper with color copy 160g A3 and Castel Polychromo pencils, first filling the page with varied asymmetrical shapes while avoiding static symmetry and focusing on straight vs. curved line choices and directional movement. The shapes are lightly toned to emphasize silhouette, then selected shapes are developed into forms by adding center lines and turning edges, placing an eye line (not centered) and constructing faces. The process allows small shape adjustments, stresses the need for form/structure knowledge and a visual library built from reference studies and inspiration from artists and shows, and demonstrates turning multiple shapes into final character head designs, including non-human options and themed or reference-based approaches. 00:00 Designing for TV Animation 00:35 Drawing Dynamic Four Shapes 00:56 Line Choices and Asymmetry 02:20 Shading for Strong Silhouettes 02:44 Turning Shapes into Heads 03:03 Form Structure and Eyelines 03:47 Building a Visual Library 04:23 More Head Variations 05:52 Final Designs and Next Steps Subscribe to this YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/drawingforce?sub_confirmation=1 To learn more visit the site: https://www.drawingforce.com/ Memberships: https://www.drawingforce.com/membership FORCE Drawing Mentorships: https://www.drawingforce.com/artist-mentorship FORCE Courses: https://www.drawingforce.com/courses Mike’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelmattesi/ Swendly’s Instagram https://www.instagram.com/swendlybenilia/ Mritunjay’s Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mritunjayvarun_/
