Backstrap weaving 9- IKAT
In this video, I am going to share my attempt for the warp ikat weaving with the backstrap loom. The length of warp was prepared a bit longer than I would like since it was originally prepared to be used for a floor loom instead of a backstrap loom, taking longer time in dressing up the warp on the loom matching the ikat patterns. Preparing the warp on the warping board, getting ready for the resist dye by tightly blocking sections with plastic wrap and yarn. (00:07) Dyeing Rinse thoroughly and dry the dyed warp without disturbing the warp bundle. Secure the warp on the wrap bars and check the alignment of ikat patterns. (00:31) Ikat patterns are matching fairly well, but I’ve decided to adjust the warp a bit more. After the warp adjustment, tie the warp tightly to secure the adjustment while retying the warp ends on the warp bars. (01:04) To prepare retying the front warp bar, temporarily secure the end of the warp in the back warp bar in tension. (01:37) Replace the cross ties with lease sticks and secure them. (2:07) Additional rods are installed for the better tension control. (3:29) Bamboo skewers are incorporated along with regular rods, since they are stiffer than yarn and less bulky than rods. Once the necessary rods (lease sticks) are installed regulating the tension and securing patterns, retie the warp to the Front Warp Bar. (4:40) Once the even tension is achieved, secure it with square knots. Installing the Heddle stick (Hitch knot heddles are used) (7:08) For a closer look of the hitch knot heddle making, please reference my other video “Backstrap weaving5-weft3” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGcxrimDjt4&t=2s (7:08) Installing the shed stick (9:11) Since the front warp bar is secured and extra lease sticks are installed based on the warp adjustment, the rest of the warp needs to be comb. (09:54) Utilizing cross ties and inch bundle ties, extra lease sticks are placed for extra tension control. Comb through the rest of the warp while adding more lease sticks occasionally, making sure of the even warp tension to retie to the back warp bar. (10:37) Retie the warp to the back warp bar making sure of the even warp tension. (11:00) Luckily the warp length was short enough to weave fully stretched in my room. Weaving a heading (11:09) Weaving (11:55) While weaving is progressing, either push back or remove extra lease sticks to keep the enough room to weave. (13:42) Weaving is completed. Once weaving is completed, remove Heddles stick and shed stick. Finishing with plied/ twisted fringes (16:27) Trimming fringes. All Done!
