The plaintiffs say they paid the defendant, an attorney, a retainer for help with a landlord dispute and now cannot recover the remaining funds. They claim he performed little to no work and are suing for a refund. The defendant says he completed billable work on their behalf. He says he was surprised when, four months into the case, they informed him they had hired another attorney and were terminating his services. He acknowledges issuing a refund check, but says it is far less than the amount they are demanding.
