Balancing redox reactions is very different from balancing normal chemical equations because electrons also need to be accounted for. There are two main methods to balance redox reactions: the oxidation number method and the half-reaction method. In this video, I focus on the half-reaction method, a powerful and systematic approach. We’ll work through the example FeO + MnO₄⁻ → Fe₂O₃ + MnO₂, showing how to balance it step by step in acidic solution first, and then applying the additional step needed for basic solution. You’ll learn how to: - Recognize why electrons must be balanced in redox reactions - Split the equation into oxidation and reduction half-reactions - Balance all atoms except oxygen and hydrogen - Balance oxygen with H₂O and hydrogen with H⁺ - Balance charges by adding electrons - Combine half-reactions so electrons cancel - Add the extra step for basic conditions At the end, we’ll put everything together so you can confidently balance redox reactions in both acidic and basic conditions.
