The left arm and shaft want to align straight so generally the ball position should be somewhere inside the left heel (or under or slightly behind the left armpit) This is the goal of the release to hit with true loft with the correct angle of attack. Stance width of the right foot differs with woods and mid irons and short irons to achieve the necessary angle of attack. IF you move the ball back unto itself for mid irons and then also short irons the face will be compromised and not pointing at the target. Most people have the ball too far back in their stance because they release the club too early. You can align differently to suit the incorrect release spot. But it is a much better goal to learn to get the release in the right spot to achieve better face control and start lines and the proper angle of attack the differing clubs desire.
