Bangkok
Visit to the Temple of the Reclining Buddha Wat Pho, officially Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram, is one of Bangkok’s oldest and most important temple complexes. Set just south of the Grand Palace on Rattanakosin Island, it is best known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Its enormous golden Buddha image measures about 46 metres long and 15 metres high, showing the Buddha entering final nirvana. The soles of the statue’s feet are decorated with mother-of-pearl panels showing auspicious Buddhist symbols. But Wat Pho is more than one famous statue. The temple was restored and expanded under Kings Rama I and Rama III, and became an early centre of public learning in Thailand. Its inscriptions and diagrams covered subjects such as medicine, literature, religion, and traditional knowledge; today Wat Pho is also strongly associated with traditional Thai massage, which is still taught and practised there. Walking through Wat Pho, visitors find glittering chedis, colourful ceramic mosaics, serene courtyards, monk residences, prayer halls, and rows of Buddha images. The atmosphere mixes grandeur with calm: gold leaf, incense, bells, chanting, and the slow movement of travellers and worshippers. It is one of Bangkok’s essential cultural stops, especially for anyone interested in Thai Buddhism, royal history, architecture, or traditional healing.
