BASE ROT .. When a cutting rots from the base up, it is usually because of too much water. If you are planting a ROOTED cutting, do not water for about one week, to give the roots time to adjust and take hold of the new medium. If you’re planting an UNROOTED cutting (without roots) do NOT water for at least 3 to 4 weeks when a gentle tug on the cutting has ‘resistance’ which indicates the presence of roots. In all cases, plant new cuttings in a relatively dry mix of coarse orchid bark mix, with coarse or super coarse perlite and a bit of premium potting mix. Remember, nothing kills your new epicactus cuttings quicker than WATER.
