Moira Stuart reads the news and Helen Rollason covers the sport in this partial bulletin from Sunday, 30th April, 1995. Top stories include a war of words between prime minister John Major and leader of the opposition Tony Blair, a failed attempt to agree a ceasefire in Bosnia, and protests about the Criminal Justice Act. Sports-wise, Damon Hill has won the San Marino Grand Prix, Blackburn have lost against West Ham in their title run-in, Middlesbrough have played their last match at Ayresome Park, and Mike Atherton has been temporarily reappointed England captain. This may just be my own ignorance, but it strikes me that they used to treat the viewer as far more knowledgeable and aware of current affairs back then. In particular, all this talk about "Clause Four" without even alluding to what it is, or the Criminal Justice Act obviously being controversial, but what exactly are all those people protesting about? There's a good chance the average consumer would know enough to get by, but it's not really helpful all these years later. Not that that was ever their goal, of course. Also included at the beginning is the end of the Antiques Roadshow and the BBC1 junction that followed. Note the promos for As Time Goes By, Only Fools and Horses, and Hamish Macbeth, while there's special programming lined up in tribute to Ginger Rogers, who had passed away five days earlier. I feel like that's something that should be more commonly known. Many thanks to Ben for sending me this recording.
