In 2023, after a decades-long fight against malaria, Belize was certified as malaria-free by the World Health Organization. Belize effectively coordinates across sectors and borders to maintain malaria surveillance, provide prompt access to diagnosis and treatment, and respond to every single malaria case. The Vector Control Chief of Operations at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mr. Kim Bautista, says, "Whether it be through mobile clinics, whether it be through the malaria program, through voluntary collaborators, through community health workers, the ministry has always had a presence." @healthbz Vector control staff, health care providers, and community volunteers support disease surveillance to prevent the re-establishment of malaria transmission. Additionally, Belize provides free access to early malaria diagnosis and quality treatment for everyone, including migrant and seasonal workers.
