Bendy Potatoes
In today’s experiment we have one of our volunteers, Tiffany, show us how to make some bendy potatoes to learn about the process of osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of a solvent from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration. Since potato cells have lower solute concentrations than salted or sugared water, water from the cells leave, causing the cells to shrink and the potato to become bendy. Osmosis is also the process which plants use to gather water from the soil. For this experiment you’ll need a small or medium potato, a knife (adult supervision may be needed), a cutting board, water, salt, sugar, measuring cups and spoons, and a pen and sticky notes.
