Originally a socialist journalist, he broke with socialism during World War I and embraced nationalism, authoritarianism, and militarism. In 1922, Mussolini rose to power after the March on Rome, establishing a one-party dictatorship. As Il Duce, he eliminated political opposition, controlled the media, and sought to create a totalitarian state inspired by Roman imperial imagery. His regime promoted nationalism, discipline, and expansionism, while suppressing dissent and civil liberties. Mussolini pursued aggressive foreign policies, including the invasion of Ethiopia, intervention in the Spanish Civil War, and alliance with Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler. Italy’s entry into World War II proved disastrous, exposing military weakness and economic strain. In 1943, Mussolini was removed from power and arrested. After a brief return as head of a German-backed puppet state, he was captured by Italian partisans and executed in 1945.
