Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are currently being deployed on power systems primarily to provide energy arbitrage that can be called upon to balance the system during system shortages or peak periods. However, BESS could also be called upon to act as an ancillary service product to provide reserves during system emergencies to provide primary /secondary frequency support. Several case studies of systems in SAPP will be presented where the author provided guidance and support to enable system operators in the SADC region to integrate renewable energy generation. The author will further demonstrate how BESS was used as a mitigation technique/strategy to provide fast frequency response (FFR) in regions where rotational energy/inertia was eroded.
