Do you have a method or randomly write what comes? Taking notes is not always that easy and it takes time to learn how to do it. IN this video, I share the methods I use to take notes more effectively and save a lot of time not only when reading the article but also later on when you have to go back to it. Some people enjoy highlighting the most important points so the next time they read the article they will save some time as they will already know what is important. However, we, humans, tend to highlight too much and the article ends up being fully highlighted. Therefore, is it really useful? It is also possible to use some note-taking software such as “Evernote”. The method consists of summarizing the article in a few sentences: 1. Write the big research question of the article (Last paragraph of introduction)2. Write the background in 3 sentences maximum (Work done before in this field) 3. Write the specific research questions that the authors try to answer (Last paragraph of introduction/ Results headlines/ figures) 4. Write the main results linked with the question (Figures/ tables = big summary of the results) 5. Write the methods used to respond to each question they asked (What test did they do? How did they do it?) 6. Discussion/ conclusion (Interpretations of the results? What do the authors think the results mean? Do you agree? can you come up with an alternative interpretation? Limitations in study design? What did they miss? What is the proposed next step?). For example, if a paper topic is depression, neuroinflammation, and animal models of stress; state the big questions they wanted to respond to. Then read the introduction to get the broad idea. Then what results? (bodyweight/ anxiety-like behaviour/ depressive-like behaviour/ inflammation/ IDO and GTP CH1). Then which methods were used to respond to those results. You do not have to follow exactly those steps. If you are reading for the first time and want to get to know the topic, then follow them. If you are only looking for papers for specific parts of your report/ article, then select what you want to do. If you read for writing your introduction, then you will read articles really close to your research question and you will read mainly the introduction and remember what you liked from it. Same if you want to write the discussion, you will be checking the results and the discussion quickly. If you don’t understand something, read it again. If you do not know the method, then read MdM or check on the internet what that test is. Have a section “reading for writing article” including the subsections “introduction/ discussion”. It will allow you to know where to look for when you will be writing your results.
