Better efficiency with a different wrist angle when running
It is not entirely uncommon for runners, particularly those who pay attention to their running technique and try to find a slightly better arm movement whilst running, to turn their palms inwards towards their body. Not everyone does this, and even if you do, it does not necessarily mean anything negative. There are many elite runners who run with their palms facing inwards towards their body. But over the years, and having met thousands of runners, I have noticed that when the palms are turned inwards, it is not just the position of the arms that changes. The entire movement of the shoulders and arms can be affected in a negative way. In the worst-case scenario, hands facing inwards lead to a lower cadence, which can create unnecessary vertical movement; this not only costs more energy but also generates greater vertical force upon landing. At the same time, it can increase your overstride resulting in a longer ground contact time – which is undesirable – and may also increase your braking forces and lateral forces, causing you to leak energy sideways. However, for many runners, simply adjusting the angle of the wrist makes it much easier to maintain good, efficient running form.
