Today we’re exploring a tuning that’s both unusual and surprisingly friendly: B F# D G B E. At first glance, it looks like standard tuning that’s been tweaked, but that low B and the dropped D string completely reshape the way chords and melodies sit under your fingers.
What I love about this tuning is that it offers something in between two worlds: on one hand, it gives you the depth and resonance of a baritone-style low B; on the other hand, it keeps enough of the familiar shapes from standard tuning so you don’t feel like you’re starting from scratch. You can still grab standard voicings, but they’ll sound bigger, darker, and more open.
