Big Eight String Tone using a Six String with Midi Pickup
This demo shows how to take the midi output of a fishman triple play pickup and produce a thick "djenty" eight string tone. Then, using a real time quantizer script in Logic, we can tighten the rhythm live and create complex patterns. Here's the details: 1) The standard guitar pickups are amplified through Helix Native using the "Djente La Fuente" preset 2) The midi output is driving "Real Eight" and "Djinn Bass" virtual instruments, along with the standard Logic "SoCal" kick drum, and an FM piano run through a Bias Amp "Positive Insane" amp sim. The "Real Eight" is amped by Helix Native's "Bulb Rhythm" preset, and "Djinn Bass" by Bias Amp's "Blue Line" bass amp preset. 3) The apreggiator is Logic's "Opening Sequence" preset. 4) The standard guitar tone is also doubled by Logic's "Monster Bass" and "Jane Rampart" synths. 5) BIG CAVEAT: I flubbed the recording and forgot to record enable the guitar output, so I only had the mic'd speakers and iphone mic for the mix. I was hoping to get a better tone for comparison, but the point was to feature the midi output anyway. 6) Most of the pedal board live control is via CCs and interpreted through Scripter MidiFX plugins. To switch between the standard and midi guitar sounds, I ended up using a variation of the "Side Chain Compression" technique used in dance music, but with settings so it was instantaneous. This allows for all the sound changes to be done without "Learned Control Assignments", which makes all the sound based on MIDI CCs and not automation for simplicity.
