Binary Breakdown - M8 Community Jam #042 - Sad Robot

Oh boy, I struggled to get any traction on this jam for at least 3-4 days. Mulling over sad idea over sad idea until I had a moment of happy clarity when thinking of one of the saddest things to happen to music since AI, the death of the partnership of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, AKA Daft Punk. I couldn't bring myself to make a sad track, having have to listen it on repeat for several days would kill me, so I decided to take a page from the bible known as their album: Discovery. Learning that this style of music is more about intersecting LFO'd lowpass and highpass filters, I set upon making a track using a Disco track set to some classic French House percussion. It was really fun having all the sounds come in and out with the LFO's criss-crossing giving a lot of movement to the audio. I struggled a bit when looking at western disco tracks being so overwhelmed with the choice. I was doing a bit of doomscrolling after a long day of parenting and I came across a song by Hiromi Iwasaki titled Cinderella Honeymoon. It was everything I wanted, it has a great funk bass-line, really beautiful minor vocals with lots of moments of sustain to chop up and best of all, it is in a language I don't understand so I don't have to worry about chopping off a word and can focus solely on the sound. This was the sped up version I had found at 150 BPM which admittedly is a bit fast for a French House song, but when I found the original song that was at 132 BPM, I was already too deep into sampling and I didn't want to replace my prepped samples. PLUS I could sneak in a breakbeat in some sections without much slow down from their normal 160-170 BPM.
