The Black Caddis is a go to pattern when the darker or black Caddis flies are coming off the water. This one is fairly quick and easy to tie. Secure your thread to the hook and create a thread base down to the hook bend. Tie in a piece of small, pearl Flashabou on the far side of the hook, securing it down to the bend of the hook. Next, tie in a heavier denier black thread - also to the hook bend - to help make your Flashabou more durable. Dub the abdomen with Hare dubbing in black, creating a reverse taper so the abdomen is thicker at the hook bend and narrows as you tie toward the hook eye. End with about a quarter of the hook behind the eye remaining. Now take open wraps of the Flashabou to create a nice ribbing through the dubbing. Then, counter-wrap the thread between the gaps in the Flashabou ribbing. Secure and remove both materials. The pattern has a light, CDC underwing. I'm using light grey dun feather fibers here. Secure them to the top of the hook shank where the abdomen ends. Don't worry that they are too long. You'll break them off at the end. Clean and stack a small clump of deer hair - dyed black - and cut the butt ends off so the length of the wing extends to the end of the hook. Secure the deer hair tightly (gel spun thread or Nanosilk works best) to the top of the hook shank, and then take your final thread wraps behind the hook eye. Whip finish and this fly is DONE!
