The leading causes of blindness can vary depending on age and geographic region, but common factors include: Major Medical Causes Cataracts: This is the leading cause of blindness worldwide and involves the clouding of the eye's natural lens. Light cannot pass through a cloudy lens effectively, resulting in blurry or dim vision. This condition is often age-related but can also be congenital or caused by trauma, radiation, or certain medications. Glaucoma: Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve, often associated with high fluid pressure inside the eye. The optic nerve is crucial for transmitting visual signals to the brain. Vision loss from glaucoma typically starts in the peripheral (side) vision and can be irreversible if not treated early. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): AMD is the leading cause of blindness among older adults in developed countries. It damages the macula, the central part of the retina needed for sharp, central vision, making detailed tasks like reading or recognizing faces difficult. Diabetic Retinopathy: A complication of diabetes, this condition damages the blood vessels in the retina. The vessels may leak fluid or bleed, leading to blurred vision and, if untreated, permanent vision loss. It is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults in the U.S.. Uncorrected Refractive Errors: Issues like severe nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, if left uncorrected, are a major contributor to visual impairment globally. The number of persons with reduced vision due to uncorrected refractive error exceeds that of those with the conditions mentioned above. Injuries and Trauma: Accidents, chemical burns, or sports injuries can cause severe damage to the eye, resulting in vision loss, often in one eye. Genetic Conditions: Inherited disorders like retinitis pigmentosa, which causes gradual vision loss starting with night vision and peripheral vision, are a cause of blindness, especially in children and young adults. Neurological Issues: Problems with the brain regions responsible for vision, such as those caused by a stroke or brain tumor, can result in blindness or significant vision impairment. Nutritional Deficiencies: A severe lack of Vitamin A can lead to damage of the cornea and result in what is known as nutritional blindness, most commonly seen in children in low-income settings. Many of the leading causes of vision impairment are preventable or treatable with timely access to quality eye care. Regular comprehensive eye exams are crucial for early detection and management of these conditions
