Blocking drill 4 blocker peels
Timing and coordination between middle blockers and outside blockers is an important part of putting up a strong block. In this drill, players get multiple reps without the ball – starting from a stationary position near the center of the net, then moving to the outside and jumping in unison. The key is “moving together as a unit, grooving the pattern,” says Jed Stotsenberg, coach at WAVE Volleyball in Del Mar, California. Start with four blockers at the net. Two will be halfway to the pin, the other two will be inside, closer to the middle of the net. On the coach’s command, all blockers move toward their respective pins. Outside blockers take a sidestep, inside blockers can do a “crossover or a lead step, depending on where they are,” Stotsenberg says. When the rep is complete, the outside blocker runs to the back of the line on the opposite side, the inside blocker becomes the outside blocker and the person at the front of each line runs to the net to become the inside blocker. Coaches should reinforce the importance of jumping straight up together – not floating in from the side. Pressing over the net is also an important teaching point.
