The blunderbuss is a 17th–19th century muzzle-loading firearm with a short, flared barrel, acting as the predecessor to the shotgun and a close-quarters weapon for navy and coach guards. Its flared muzzle was primarily designed for easy, rapid loading, not to increase spread. It is highly effective within 15 yards for a wide-radius blast, packing high damage but suffering from poor accuracy and low velocity at longer ranges.
