Weekly BobBlast Issue 622 Back to the Basics, Part Three—Painting an Abstract Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! This week’s BobBlast goes back to Basics! This is Part Three of a three part series, all focusing on your light source… this time, we are painting an abstract. Does Abstract Painting have a Light Source? Well, yes and no… think Contrast instead. In an abstract painting, the principle of dark-to-light-dark-to-light creates contrast. The focal point is at the spot of the most contrast. Using bright contrasting values can be dramatic and eye-popping. I like to lead the viewer's eye to the contrasting point on the painting Another word about light source in an abstract painting… Let light come from within! In the Demo, I started with a red mid tone applied all over the surface. I let some of the red peek through, while also adding lights and white as a “light source”. The lightest part was the focal point as it was the spot of the most contrast. Incorporating a light source in your paintings will give focus, shape, dimension and a point of interest!
