Thread grafting is technique used in bonsai tree cultivation which is used to add additional branches to your trees. It is used when a bonsai is missing a branch in an important place and there is no sign that one will grow.
A hole is drilled through the trunk of the tree, a thin branch is looped back on itself and inserted through the hole. After a period of time, the trunk and branch thicken up and fuse together. At this time, the inserted branch can be pruned, leaving the protruding branch.
