The bottlebrush buckeye is native to the southeastern U.S. and hardy up to zone 4. It also does well in the UK, some northern states and parts of Canada. Bottlebrush buckeye flowers in summer with long panicles that extend the blooming season and attract pollinators. The shrub’s rich, green palmate leaflets form a nice low-level canopy. It’s great for privacy, and is useful for filling in gaps beneath the branches of larger trees. In autumn, the leaves turn a nice yellow and the capsules that hold the seeds fall to the ground. This makes bottlebrush buckeye a great food source and habitat for native wildlife. Bottlebrush buckeyes need moist, well-drained soil to thrive. They do not tolerate dry soil or drought conditions, especially when newly planted.
