Breadwinner (Political Oppression)
This animated film captures the struggle of a family in Afghanistan to survive Taliban oppression -- with a focus on the struggle of the family's daughter Parvana who becomes an only child when her brother is killed by a mine. The film has received numerous awards for its haunting use of cartoon animation to portray the harsh realities of life in Afghanistan -- particularly for women and girls. Angelina Jolie was the film's Executive Producer. The film stars Saara Chaudry, Soma Bhatia, Noorin Gulamgaus, Kane Mahon, and Laara Sadiq. Nora Twomey directed the film with additional executive production by Mimi Polk Gitlin.
