Bridlington

We used to play in the sewage outlet, making dams - at the old ‘holiday camp’ at Wilsthorpe Bridlington. This video is of south beach Bridlington and the cliffs and chalets as they are now. 70 years ago this area was very different, there was ‘amusements’ slot machines, bingo, shops selling food and fishing tackle. There was even a small cinema that changed films several times a week. The chalet of my childhood was called Summersville, and was probably built in the 1920’s The cabins ( they were known as cabins in West Yorkshire) in the film are later replacements. This whole area now seems very different to me. But that’s because I’m remembering it as it was, just a few years after WW2. There’s a massive galvanised fence around a speedboat compound and it seems as though access to the cabins is channeled down a very narrow path. It seems as though the wide open access to the beach has been blocked by new chalets. Bridlington South beach extends to Wilsthorpe and looks very different to how it was just after WW2. Sand dunes now instead of low, raw earth cliffs, being eroded by extreme high tides. Walking out of what once was a ‘holiday camp’ I longed to be somewhere else. ( Like back in 1953) lol or somewhere- such as a pavement cafe in Italy enjoying exquisite food. There’s nothing like that now at Wilsthorpe - but the beach is still there, stretching seemingly endlessly down the coast. It’s beautiful- as wonderful as it always was for a holiday at the seaside.
