This tutorial shows an example of Brinell hardness test which is used to measure the hardness (resistance to plastic deformation) of materials. Aluminium is used as the test sample and a 2D axisymmetric model is used to simulate the plastic deformation in the sample caused by the mechanical contact stress from the indentor. The Brinell hardness number (BHN) is then calculated using the diameter of the indentation on the sample.
