Bronchiectasis is defined by permanent enlargement of the bronchi due to prior infection or impaired mucus clearance. This leads to excessive, foul-smelling mucus production, shortness of breath, recurrent infections, and digital clubbing. Diagnosis requires a CT scan, while treatment focuses on airway clearance therapies, bronchodilators, antibiotics for infection, and oxygen for hypoxemia. Severe cases may require intubation and mechanical ventilation. Asthma is a long-term inflammatory airway disease marked by reversible obstruction and episodic bronchospasm. Triggers include smoke, allergens, cold air, fragrances, and stress. Symptoms range from wheezing and coughing to chest tightness and hypoxemia, with severity varying from mild to life-threatening. ABG results can show respiratory alkalosis early but may progress to respiratory acidosis in severe cases. Management involves oxygen therapy, bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and monitoring with PFTs or peak flow meters. Severe, unresponsive cases (status asthmaticus) may require intubation, continuous bronchodilators, or heliox therapy. COPD, encompassing chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is caused mainly by long-term exposure to cigarette smoke or irritants. It results in chronic inflammation and irreversible airflow obstruction. Stable COPD patients often show compensated respiratory acidosis, while acute exacerbations present with dyspnea, hypoxemia, and uncompensated respiratory acidosis. Treatment emphasizes smoking cessation, pulmonary rehab, long-acting bronchodilators, corticosteroids, vaccines, and patient education. Low-flow oxygen (SpO₂ 88–92%) is key, and non-invasive ventilation (BiPAP) is preferred for ventilatory failure, though intubation may be necessary in severe cases. In summary, bronchiectasis is characterized by structural airway damage and mucus retention, asthma by reversible inflammation and hyperreactivity, and COPD by progressive, irreversible obstruction. Recognizing their distinct features is essential for appropriate treatment and improving patient outcomes. 🟥 Bronchiectasis vs. Asthma vs. COPD [Full Guide] ➜ https://bit.ly/2ztZHct 🟧 Pathology Practice Questions [Paperback] ➜ https://amzn.to/4jHC9AX ————— 📘 FREE STUFF ▪ Free Cheat Sheets 👉 https://bit.ly/3IKenWk ▪ TMC Practice Exam 👉 http://bit.ly/2XlwASL 📗 PASS THE BOARD EXAMS ▪ CSE Boost Course 👉 https://bit.ly/3VBwSB2 ▪ TMC Test Bank 👉 https://bit.ly/3QNqwLX ▪ TMC Exam Hacks 👉 https://bit.ly/3iLmVS2 ▪ Daily TMC Practice Questions 👉 https://bit.ly/4cYnOxl ▪ TMC/CSE Bundle (Save $) 👉 https://bit.ly/3VLSyuo 📕 MORE FROM RTZ ▪ Test Bank (Free) 👉 http://bit.ly/2Kp73ln ▪ Glossary 👉 https://bit.ly/3g6s4Pj ▪ About Us 👉 http://bit.ly/2Xgk5YH ▪ Testimonials 👉 http://bit.ly/2x7b5Gl 🌐FOLLOW US ▪ Instagram 👉 http://bit.ly/2FhF0jV ▪ X 👉 http://bit.ly/2ZsS6T1 ▪ Facebook 👉 http://bit.ly/2MSEejt 🚑MEDICAL DISCLAIMER This content is for educational and informational purposes only.
