Caerlaverock Castle is one of Scotland’s most distinctive medieval fortresses, famous for its rare triangular shape and impressive moat. Located near Dumfries, it dates mainly from the 13th century and was a stronghold of the powerful Maxwell family. What makes it special * Triangular design: Unlike most castles, it has only three sides, with towers at each corner. * Moat: Still filled with water, giving it a dramatic, almost storybook appearance. * Twin-towered gatehouse: The grand entrance is one of the most striking features. * Atmosphere: Partially ruined, but very evocative—great for photography and history lovers. Historical highlights * The castle played a role in the Wars of Scottish Independence, including a siege by King Edward I of England in 1300. * It was later rebuilt in the 17th century, blending medieval defenses with more comfortable living spaces. * Abandoned in the late 1600s after political conflicts, leaving the ruins you see today. Visiting today * Managed by Historic Environment Scotland. * Open to visitors most of the year (hours vary seasonally) * Nearby is the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve, great for wildlife and walks.
