A ball goes up. It slows. It stops -- for one single instant -- and falls back to Earth. How high did it go? This is calculus. Explained as if you're in middle school. No prerequisites. No jargon. No narration -- just the visuals doing the talking. We solve f(x) = -x^2 - 8x - 9 to find its peak at (-4, 7) using the derivative and the Power Rule. What you'll see: - A ball arcing through the air. The peak is the question. - The two pillars of calculus: integration (areas under curves) and the derivative (slope at a point). We focus on the derivative. - The slope of a curve at a single point. We don't define it -- we SHOW it. A secant line cutting through two points slowly slides them together until the secant smoothly becomes a TANGENT. That's the derivative. Live slope readout updates as the points converge. - A tangent line that walks along the curve, color-coded by sign. Green when slope is positive (going up), gold when zero (at the peak), red when negative (going down). The peak is where the tangent goes flat. - The Power Rule: f(x) = c x^n becomes f'(x) = n c x^(n-1). Applied term-by-term to our parabola. The constant -9 gets crossed out -- its slope is zero. - f'(x) = -2x - 8. Set it equal to zero. Solve for x = -4. Plug back in. f(-4) = 7. - A cinematic camera zoom into the vertex (-4, 7) where the tangent is exactly horizontal. That's it. Three steps to the top: 1. Take the derivative. 2. Set it to zero. 3. Plug back in. If you've ever been told calculus is hard -- this video is for you. It isn't hard. It's geometry with a steering wheel. Send this to a middle schooler. They will get it.
