Can electrons exist inside a nucleus?
Can an electron exist inside a nucleus? We look at three different points : 1) Due to Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, if an electron is confined to nuclear sizes, it must have an energy (due to its momentum) that is quite huge. When you compare beta electrons, this value is many times larger than the KE of beta electrons. 2) Subatomic particles like electrons and protons have spin angular momentum, and spin quantum number of +-1/2 associated with it. Nuclei also has a spin quantum number due to its constituent particles; which take 0 or integral values for even-even nuclei, and half -integral values for even-odd nuclei. If electrons did exist inside the nucleus, its spin would be different that what is seen in nature. 3) Charged particles that have a spin angular momentum also have a magnetic moment associated with it. So, they can interact with external magnetic fields. Both protons and electrons have magnetic moments of their own. But magnetic moment is inversely related to its mass. So the magnetic moment of an electron is many many times greater than the magnetic moment of protons. But when you look at the magnetic moment of different nuclei, its comparable to that of a proton (suggesting protons exist inside) but not with the values of that of electron (suggesting electrons don't exist inside) Additional point: During radioactive beta decay, electrons are ejected from the nucleus. These electrons are a result of neutron to proton decay (to balance the excess number of neutrons in certain nuclear configurations) Peace. “ Truth is the offspring of silence and unbroken meditation. ” — Isaac Newton ------------------------------------------- FORWARD YOUR QUESTIONS HERE: http://www.8physics.com/ -------------------------------------------- LINK TO OTHER VIDEOS -------------------------------------------- What is a Geiger Muller Counter? - GM Counter https://youtu.be/Qn8otCU5bhQ The Four Fundamental Forces https://youtu.be/e9zWwdDbnXw Ehrenfest Theorem | Derivation using Schrodinger's Picture https://youtu.be/oKWCIf8cy5s ObtainingTime Independent Schrodinger's Equation from Time Dependent form https://youtu.be/d8JXjrzy54w Electron Wave in Bohr Model of Atom!! https://youtu.be/4qxfBTqBFn8 Inductor | Why Current Lags behind Voltage by 90 degrees? https://youtu.be/VOgSpjZ1Vbo Newton's Laws of Motion https://youtu.be/umJzxQHhKrA Dynamics of a Point Mass Particle | Conservation of Linear/ Angular Momentum/ Energy https://youtu.be/rQ8B_g3Vh6E History of Special Relativity (Part 1) - Galilean Invariance & Maxwell's Equations https://youtu.be/P79Ur8LVcy8 History of Special Relativity (Part 2) - Michelson Morley Experiment https://youtu.be/FQGGSNIWm3o Special Theory of Relativity https://youtu.be/RYIY4APbV5Q What is Time Dilation?
