Canon HV30 FireWire Commentary Setup
Canon HV30 through FireWire, straight to PC, video capture. I had problems with other cameras, setting them up for quick video commentary. With the NEX cameras, for example, I couldn't see myself in the screen (it doesn't flip out). Also, was difficult to focus. Then I had to do the card to computer transfer dance. I read that some of the late model DV camcorders could capture to HDV format straight to the PC through firewire (ends up 1280x720). I saw a Canon HV30 on Craigslist for $200 so thought I'd try it out. I was very pleasantly surprised. I setup a crude soft-light above my head (tracing paper in front of florescent). I plugged in a $25 Audio Technica lav into the camera (not from Radio Shack as I said in video). I captured using Sony Movie Studio (any video editor should work). As you can see, the quality if vastly superior to any webcam. When comparing HDV footage to 1920x1080 output, I thought it a little soft. However, adding a bit of sharpening in the editor brought the HDV closer to the higher res footage (though this clip is straight from capture file, not processed).
