Welcome to Caregiver Conversations, presented by The Sumaira Foundation and your co-hosts, TSF Ambassadors Maria and Trudie. This support group session was held live on Zoom on May 10th, 2026. In this session, a silent health crisis - caregiver depression, was discussed. Depression is an incredibly common, normal response to the chronic stress of caregiving, affecting many. It is a serious, treatable condition, and definitely not a personal failure. Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and exhaustion are normal, yet these feelings should not be ignored, as they can severely impact both caregiver health and care they provide. 🩷 It is common for caregivers to develop mild or more serious depression as a result of the constant demands they face while providing care. Caregiver depression often manifests in both emotional and physical symptoms, which may be overlooked due to focusing on the care recipient. 💞 Caregiving while experiencing depression is a serious, common challenge that requires active self-care, professional support, and boundary-setting to avoid burnout. Key strategies include accepting help from others, utilizing respite care services to take breaks, joining support groups, and seeking therapy or medical advice for depression symptoms. Join us each month for meaningful conversations, practical guidance, and shared wisdom from caregivers who truly understand. You are not alone. Together, we can bring light and support to even the most challenging moments.
