- Centipede Longplay (Atari 7800 Version) - Centipede is a 1987 fixed-screen shooter for the Atari 7800, based on Atari’s 1981 arcade game designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg. The goal is still beautifully direct: move around the lower part of the screen, shoot the centipede as it winds down through the mushrooms, and deal with the spiders, fleas, and scorpions that keep turning a simple shooting field into a mess of sudden threats. As an arcade conversion, this is one of the Atari 7800’s stronger examples. The graphics are colorful and clear, the action is easy to read, and the game keeps the arcade structure intact without feeling as severely compromised as many earlier home versions. The lack of a trackball obviously changes the feel, because Centipede was originally built around that kind of fast, smooth movement, but the 7800 controls work well enough to keep the game responsive and enjoyable. The real strength of this version is that it does not just reproduce the basic single-player game. Alongside the usual alternating two-player mode, the Atari 7800 version adds simultaneous two-player options, including cooperative play and a competitive mode where players can interfere with each other. That gives the cartridge more personality than a simple straight port, and it makes the 7800 version stand out even among the many home versions of Centipede. The game itself remains a classic exercise in controlled chaos. Every destroyed segment creates another mushroom, every mushroom changes how the centipede descends, and the extra insects force you to divide your attention between clearing space, staying alive, and keeping the main threat from reaching the bottom of the screen. It is simple, but the pressure builds naturally, and the best moments come from trying to restore order to a screen that keeps becoming more dangerous. For the Atari 7800, Centipede is an easy game to recommend. It may not fully replace the arcade machine, especially without the original trackball feel, but it is a strong, lively, and very playable home version. More importantly, the exclusive simultaneous multiplayer modes give it a reason to exist beyond nostalgia, making it one of the better arcade-style releases in the system’s library. #retrogamingloft #centipede #atari7800
