A base mesh like this is a half completed mesh that is open for you to make changes. It's important during the early stages that you resist the temptation to add too much detail. Adding detail means you are committing to your mesh and by doing so, you make it increasingly difficult to make changes as your model comes together. In part 2, we're going to crease the base mesh of our torso and depending on personal decisions, you may want to extrude from your head mesh. In this case, I am opting for a more versatile choice by creating the torso as a separate mesh.
