I developed this drill after meeting Tim Rajeff at the Fly Tackle Dealer Show in Denver in about 1996. Tim's rod did this at his backcast stops. So I tried to emulate what he did. Lacking Tim's athleticism, my version has a much slower line speed than his and a fly leg that often descends below the rod leg in what is called by some today a "trailing" loop. I still call it a "closed" loop, which is what it was called on the early FFF/FFI Casting Instructor Certification tests that began in 1993. It is a mechanically simple way to deliver a fly out to around 60 feet with very little effort.
