I don’t know if it was luck or good planning… but one week before my steering failed, I decided to inspect the system beneath the aft cabin bunk — right down at the steering quadrant.
That’s not where it eventually failed.
The actual failure happened at the helm, at the opposite end of the system, where the control cables let go.
But here’s the thing…
If I hadn’t gone down to check the quadrant, I would never have found — or understood — the emergency tiller.
And that’s what saved me on the day my steering failed.
