Cheeseburger Roll
Making a Cheeseburger Roll for dinner tonight - all you need to add is a salad and you are done. I got this idea from my friend Maria and added my own sauce, sautéed onions and bacon. Cheeseburger Roll Trainor My Version Maria Trainor/Elise Feiner Roll: 1 batch of pizza dough (1 pound) I used a Publix Dough proofed at room temperature 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, peeled and diced Garlic salt to taste Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 pound of chopped meat, browned, drained and cooled Montreal Steak Seasoning to taste Hamburger Sauce Shredded cheese of your choice, I used cheddar Diced Pickles or pickle slices, drained 12 slices of bacon, cooked and cut into small pieces; set aside (I used 3 packages of Hormel Black Label prepackaged slices – 4 to a package) Hamburger Sauce: About 1 cup mayonnaise 3-4 tablespoons Ketchup 1½ tablespoons pickle juice 1½ teaspoons mustard ½ teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce Garlic salt to taste Freshly grated black pepper Topping: 1 egg yolk 1 tablespoon water Sesame seeds Mix the sauce ingredients together, place in a squeeze bottle if you have one, and refrigerate until ready to use. You can do this a day ahead. I used on the roll itself in place of the ketchup and mustard in the original recipe. I also served it on the side to put on the slices of the roll. Taste as you go and make any adjustments to your taste. In a large sauté pan melt the butter with the oil, sauté the onions with a little garlic salt and black pepper until beginning to caramelize. Remove from pan and set aside to cool. In the same pan brown the hamburger meat. I seasoned it with garlic salt, pepper, and some Montreal Steak Seasoning. Drain any fat and liquid from the pan, and cool; set aside. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a large baking sheet (I used a half sheet pan) with aluminum foil and set aside. Prep everything ahead that you can. Place the pickles in a bowl and drain off as much liquid as you can. Grate your cheese and set aside. Cook your bacon and set aside. Prepare your egg wash, mix the egg yolk and water together and set aside. This way when you are making the roll, everything will be ready to use. Place a sheet of parchment paper as large as your pan on the counter and lightly flour it. Place the pizza dough on the floured parchment paper and guide into a rectangular shape. Use a rolling pin to enlarge it to a large rectangle. Place the cooled meat on the dough, leaving a one-inch border at the top of the roll. Place the onions on top of the meat. Place a good amount of the hamburger sauce over the onions, I use a squeeze bottle to do this (if you don’t have a bottle, put the sauce in a Ziplock bag and nip the corner and use it like a piping bag) add the shredded cheese, then the pickles, and finally the bacon. Rom the wide side, tightly roll into a loaf. Be sure to seal the sides and make sure you seal the seam before baking. Transfer the parchment paper with the roll on it onto the foil lined baking sheet. Cut a few slits with a knife to allow steam to escape. Brush with an egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Let rest 10-15 minutes before cutting. Slice and enjoy! Serve with any remaining hamburger sauce to use on top of the slices if desired.
