A definition of chord progressions is given and some basic guidelines are explained for composers who are starting to compose their own pieces of music/songs. Firstly, composers are encouraged to ensure they know what key they are writing in. This is a crucial prerequisite of choosing what chords to put in a piece of music. The importance of a knowledge of primary and secondary chords are also highlighted. Students are introduced to some well known chord progressions that they can use in their compositions as a basis for development. Examples are given for each of these progressions together with audio extracts. The video is aimed at helping students who are early on in their composition journey. The "rules" should be seen as guidelines for beginners rather than being restrictive for more experienced composers.
