While it only ran a season and a half, 'Outer Limits' was a series that influenced tv science-fiction for decades. It's regarded as second only to 'The Twilight Zone' in the realm of classic tv speculative fiction, and some would rate it higher. Dominic Frontiere composed the music and since he was also a production exec he made sure that the scores didn't suffer from inadequate budgets. Frontiere's imaginative theme (heard in full over the closing credits) ranks among his best.
For the second (abbreviated) season ABC slashed the budget and wanted a complete change in the production team. Frontiere was out, and Harry Lubin of 'One Step Beyond' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5STUtcpL1o - was brought in. With little money available, Lubin mainly scored the show with cues written for 'Beyond' and 'The Loretta Young Show'. Frontiere's theme was replaced by what sounded a lot like the 'One Step Beyond' theme (aka 'Fear'). Wiki comes close in calling it a variation of 'Fear', though there's not much similarity beyond the first two notes. We believe Lubin used an alternate theme for 'One Step Beyond' - one of several considered for that show but not used. It's effective enough but Frontiere's music is still missed.
