In this lecture, we focused on questionnaire design, a fundamental aspect of collecting accurate data in epidemiologic research. Key takeaways from the training include: The importance of well-designed instruments: A well-crafted questionnaire not only enhances the quality of data but also reduces costly errors and biases, making the research experience more pleasant and meaningful for participants. Common pitfalls to avoid: We discussed the dangers of using technical jargon, double-barreled questions, and leading or judgmental phrasing. For example, questions like “Do you practice risky unprotected sex?” can introduce desirability bias, while vague terms like “harmful” can skew results. Steps in answering survey questions: We explored how respondents process and summarize information from memory, highlighting how poorly worded questions can lead to confusion and invalid responses. Response options and structure: Ensuring that response categories are exhaustive and mutually exclusive was emphasized, along with the importance of offering clear, understandable exit options. SPICE framework for survey development: This session introduced the SPICE recipe for success—Strategic assessment, Planning, Item development, Cognitive interviewing, and Evaluation.
