This build is perfect for the DIY'er or hobbyist woodworking looking to make their own computer desk. This desk's cleverly simple design uses only four easily producible unique components, and can be built in an afternoon for under $100. Build Plans: https://www.etsy.com/listing/867222514/cleverly-simple-diy-computer-desk?ref=shop_home_active_4 This design uses materials commonly found at your local Home Depot or Lowes, and uses milled 2x4's and 2x6's to keep costs down. The 2x4's are milled to 3" wide on the table saw, and lightly planed with a benchtop planer to ensure a smooth surface. The 2x6's are milled to 5" wide on the table saw, and also planed. This milling process turns inexpensive lumber into accurate and attractive material for DIY projects. Suggested Design Improvements: 1) To reduce left/right oscillation, reinforce the leg stiles by either using a hardwood like oak in the place of the pine 0.75” x 1.5”, or laminate two pine stile together to double the thickness (1.5” x 1.5”). It was very interesting to note that the three pine stiles acted like a spring system when experiencing lateral deflection. The desk oscillates like an under-damped spring system according to Hooke’s Law. While this is academically intriguing, it can be an annoying property for a desk. 2) The substitution of a hardwood for the desk top will reduce wear over time, keeping the surface aesthetically pleasing for a greater duration. This of course comes at quite an expense in comparison to pine 2x6’s.
